Dental Bridges and Crowns

Dental crowns and dental bridges are wonderful restorative dentistry options for many people suffering from missing or broken teeth.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown, also called a cap, is a hollow artificial tooth that is cemented on top of a damaged tooth. It can be used to restore the tooth’s shape, appearance and function.

The cap can be made of porcelain, composite or metal. A tooth that has been fixed with a crown looks and works very much like a natural tooth.

What happens during dental crown procedure?

This procedure can usually be completed within two visits if no additional care is needed for your teeth. Here is what our dentists generally do to place the crown:

  • Use local anesthesia and sedation (if you want).
  • Files down the tooth that needs to be restored to make room for the crown.
  • An impression, or mold, of the filed down tooth and nearby teeth is taken and used to make your final custom crown.
  • While your final crown is being made, the dentist puts a temporary crown cover over the tooth that needs to be restored.
  • Once your final crown is made, your dentist replaces the temporary crown with the final one.
  • Once the dentist makes sure the crown is the right fit, shape, colour and bite, she or he cements the crown into place.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a false tooth used to fill in a gap left by missing teeth. It is fixed between two crowns placed on each neighbouring tooth. It is permanent and can’t be removed.

What happens during a dental bridge procedure?

The process of receiving a bridge is often easier than you think. These are the general steps:

  • If you have healthy teeth on each side of a missing tooth (or teeth), the dentist will file down the two healthy teeth to prepare them for a bridge. If your teeth aren’t healthy enough or if you don’t have enough teeth to support a bridge, dental implants may be surgically placed.
  • The dentist will make a model of your teeth by taking molds. The model is used to make a custom artificial tooth (or teeth) and two crowns as one piece. The piece is called a bridge.
  • While the model is being made, the dentist puts a temporary bridge in your mouth to protect your exposed teeth and gums.
  • On your second visit, the dentist removes the temporary bridge and places the custom bridge in your mouth. The crowns will either be cemented to your two healthy teeth or attached to your dental implants on each side of the missing tooth (or teeth).

Crowns and bridges are a wonderful restorative dentistry option for many patients suffering from missing or broken teeth. Our expert team has been practicing for over 40-years and can help you get back not only the beauty of your smile, but the function and overall health of your teeth.

What are Bridges and Crowns?

A crown fits over a broken or damaged tooth like a “cap”. It can be used to mask discolouration or shape irregularities and restore the strength of a weak or damaged tooth. A bridge is a false tooth used to fill in a gap left by missing teeth. It is affixed between two crowns placed on each neighbouring tooth.

What to Expect
